Plan of the Week
May 19th
Summertime is a great time to visit our indoor shooting range and take classes at BluCore Shooting Center! If it was too busy during wintertime and hunting season, you will find that the pace has slowed down a bit. We are still offering our most popular classes like BluCore Pistol I and NRA Basic Pistol, but we are also incorporating many new classes that you will enjoy.
Two great classes that are offered this Monday are:
Prepared Woman – This class teaches women the essential aspects of keeping themselves out of harm’s way and basic defensive techniques for encountering a direct threat. Women in this class will learn ways in which to identify and avoid compromising situations, techniques for maintaining and improving situational awareness, and basic defensive use of tools such as mace/pepper-spray, taser, knife, and a firearm.
Defensive Shotgun Fundamentals – Shotguns are a very popular home defense firearm. This course teaches the weapons awareness, ready positions, and fundamentals of shooting a shotgun and employing the shotgun in a defensive or tactical situation.
On Tuesday, we are offering an Open Firearms Forum course. If you’ve been given a firearm as a gift or inherited one (or more) and you’re intimidated about how to use them, disassemble, and so on, this is the class for you. It’s important to learn how to safely own and operate the firearm(s) in your possession to help to prevent negligent or accidental discharges and ensure that you don’t damage your guns(s) during disassembly/ reassembly.
In addition to these great classes, we have BluCore Rifle II coming up this week. This is the next step for those who have taken BluCore Rifle I and really want to take their AR shooting to the next level. This is a 2-night class that is offered this Wednesday and Thursday.
With new gun laws coming into play, it might be a good time to find out about a gun trust. A Gunlocker Trust is a trust system designed to help you avoid legal hassles now, hassles if you become disabled or die, and the likelihood of an “accidental felony” due to unlawful sharing, gifting, or selling a firearm. This class will answer questions like: What is a gun trust? How does it work? What is an “accidental felony?
Black Site classes:
- Monday (5/20), 5-9pm, The Prepared Woman
- Saturday (5/25), 10am – 2pm, Home Defense Pistol I
BluCore Shooting Center classes:
- Monday (5/20), 6-9pm, Defensive Shotgun Fundamentals
- Tuesday (5/21), 5-8pm, Ladies’ Night at the Range
- Wednesday (5/22), 6-9pm, BluCore Rifle II – Night 1
- Thursday (5/22), 6-9pm, BluCore Rifle II- Night 2
- Tuesday (5/28), 6-9pm, GunLocker Trust
- Tuesday (5/28), 6-8pm, Open Firearms Forum
- Wednesday (5/29), 6-9pm, Concealed Carry Pistol – Night 1
- Thursday (5/30), 6-9pm, Concealed Carry Pistol – Night 2
Sign up online now to ensure your spot. We look forward to seeing you in class!

Firearm Related Crime Down, While Firearm Ownership at Record High
May 15th
The FBI recently released the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for 2011 and there are quite a few note-worthy statistics. From 2010 to 2011, there was a 3.8% decrease in violent crime overall. According to the FBI, that is also a 15.4% reduction from 2007 and a 15.5% decrease from 2002. (Click on graph below.)
Also of note is the fact that gun crimes have dropped dramatically from the peak in 1993. Since that time, homicides with a firearm have dropped 39% and non-fatal firearm crimes have dropped 69%. A recent Pew Research Center report also shows a decrease in other violent crimes committed with firearms (assault, robbery and sex crimes), down 75% from 1993 to 2011. Violent, non-fatal crime (both with and without a firearm) is down 72% across the same two decades. When looking at the year-to-year decline, it is interesting to see that the rapid downward trend leveled off in roughly 2001, and then took another drastic plunge in 2007-2008 (approximately the same time that firearms hit a previous sales record around the time of the 2008 Presidential election).
This would seem to be a story worthy of the front page across the country, but the same Pew report shows some disturbing statistics. While all of this media attention has been focused on firearm-related violence, the FBI UCR has been conveniently ignored. Nearly 56% of Americans polled by the Pew Research Center think that gun crime is higher than it was 20 years ago, 26% said it stayed the same, while only 12% correctly believe that gun crime has decreased in the last 20 years. What is ironic is that the states with the strictest gun control have higher rates of crime. For example, California was named the state with the strongest gun control laws in 2011 by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. That very same year, California also had the highest number of gun murders in the US — 1,220, or 3.25 murders per 100,000 people. In contrast, Texas had a rate that was significantly lower — 699, or 2.91 per 100,000 people. The state that the Brady Campaign determined to have the least amount of gun control, Utah, had 26 gun murders and a firearms murder rate of 0.97 per 100,000 people.
Private Firearms Sales at All-Time High
There are many theories regarding the cause of this consistent drop in violent crimes, both with and without firearms, and nearly every agency and advocacy group has weighed in. But one thing that is not up for debate is the fact that there are more privately held firearms in the US now than in recent history. According to FBI figures, 2012 saw more than 16.8 million background checks (only including January through October), the highest annual number since the FBI started reporting the data in 1998, with 16.4 million background checks in 2011, an increase of 14.2% over 2010. November of 2012 had over 2 million checks, and December of 2012 saw more than 2.7 million checks. While the official 2012 background check numbers have not been released by the FBI, based on the 2012 year-to-date numbers and the data from November and December, 2012 has more than 19 million background checks run for private party firearm purchases.
While background checks do not exactly equal firearms sold, due to some people being denied and others purchasing multiple firearms on one background check, most agencies accept the background check data as fairly accurate to the amount of firearms sold. There are some numbers that come from the manufacturers, showing how many firearms were produced for private markets. Ruger alone manufactured and sold over 1.1 million firearms in 2012. During the first four years of President Obama’s term, over 67 million firearms were sold to private parties in the US, more than the seven previous years combined.
So what does this all mean?
Another often overlooked statistic shows that while the US leads the world in both total firearms and firearm ownership (roughly 90 firearms per 100 people), many other western nations have significantly higher non-firearm violent crime rates. A previous victimization survey of industrialized nations shows that the US ranks as average for a country with our population.
While no one can conclusively point to a single cause for the continual decline in violent and firearm-related crimes for the last two decades, many groups have offered hypotheses. Some seem outlandish (the reduction of lead in automotive fuel leading to decreased aggression), while others (increased mandatory sentencing or the reduction in demand for crack cocaine) sound more plausible. Many pro-gun groups make the very compelling argument that the increase in firearms ownership is directly responsible for the decrease in violent crime in the US. Forty-nine states have laws allowing concealed carry, and 21 states currently have variations on the “Stand Your Ground” law. The demand for home defense and concealed carry weapons firearms is still outstripping supply. While the ‘experts’ from various agencies and organizations argue about what is causing crime numbers to drop, it appears that a large number of Americans agree with NRA Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre; “The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.”

What is Your Life Worth?
May 10th
What is your life worth? Can you put a price tag on it? No…it is priceless. You can’t go out and purchase another. You can’t go back in time and change anything. That being said, there are things you can do now that may help to prevent an ‘early departure.’ We all know the obvious things such as eating healthy and exercising, but that’s not our line of business. Our business is to help you become a better marksman (or woman). In addition to that, we can teach you how to defend yourself in a variety of ways and scenarios should your life ever be threatened.
Think about it: Would you pay $75 to be able to live another year or more? Would you pay $150 so a family member or friend would not die in your arms? I think most, if not all of us, would answer YES! These questions may seem harsh, but they also make you think about the value of life.
BluCore’s line of business focuses on marksmanship, self-defense, and preparedness training. We want you to walk down the street with a confidence that helps keep adversaries at bay. We want you to be safe in your home. If someone crosses that barrier, we want you to know how to defend yourself and gain the upper hand in that scenario. It is incredibly gratifying for us to be able to teach our customers how to stay out of harm’s way and how to defend yourself if you are in a situation where your life is threatened.
It’s easy to think ‘bad stuff’ will never happen to you, but take a look at the news. I’m sure you’ve heard about the three missing women who were just found after being kidnapped and held prisoner for 10 years. If our Prepared Woman and/or Combat Mindset classes can help to prevent this from happening to you or someone you love, the class is worth its weight in gold.
I am sure the Boston Marathon bombing is still fresh in everyone’s mind. If you were there, would you have known how to help out a friend or a stranger who was injured? Tragedies of this nature don’t occur every day, but car crashes do. That is why we offer the Tactical Casualty Care and First Responder class. The ability to recognize and act quickly to remedy injuries can be the difference between life and death.
We also recognize that many people do not want to use a gun for self defense. For those people we offer classes like Tactical Knife Options. This class is for those who want to learn offensive tactics for when a deadly threat is presented against them and a firearm is not an option or open-hand techniques are not adequate.
We also offer Basic Home Defense, which lays the groundwork for developing and implementing a good home defense plan. Topics covered in this class include alarm systems, home defense firearms and ammunition, safe rooms, barricading, basic self defense moves, and door/window security features.
If you are looking for a more advanced home defense class that does incorporate firearms, you should check out our Home Defense Pistol I class. This class teaches the fundamentals for adequately moving through and clearing a typical residential home. This course is important for anyone who uses or plans to use a firearm as their primary home defense weapon.
Unfortunately, we do not know what the future holds for each of us. What you can do is give yourself an edge by being knowledgeable about the potential dangers you face so you can avoid them. Since you can’t control what others choose to do, it is also important to know how to de-escalate a threatening and dangerous situation. If that doesn’t work, then you will want to be prepared to defend yourself in whatever manner necessary. BluCore offers a wide variety of tactical, self-defense, and preparedness classes so you can pick and choose the classes that work for you.

Why a Firearm for Home Defense?
May 7th
There are a great many reasons why people choose to own firearms, and one of the most common is home defense. Many gun-control advocates argue that ordinary citizens don’t need to worry about defending themselves or their loved ones, because that is what the police are for. But they often conveniently ignore the 2005 US Supreme Court decision in Castle Rock v. Gonzales that holds that police do not have a legal obligation to protect an individual citizen, only to protect society as whole. This means that the duty to protect one’s self and loved ones lies with the individual.
There are many instances of regular citizens defending their homes and loved ones, and almost none are reported by the mainstream media. Most of the mainstream media outlets reported the story of Sarah McKinley, the Oklahoma mother who shot and killed an intruder while defending herself and her 3 month old baby. Most of the reporters acted like this was such an uncommon occurrence, but in reality it happens every day, all across the United States. NRA members are probably familiar with the regular section in the NRA’s monthly print and online magazines, the Armed Citizen, which reports on several instances of private citizens defending their lives and property with firearms. Recently, there was a story out of Evansville, IN where two armed men (it later turned out they only had pellet guns) broke into a house and began beating one of the residents. The other resident, Matt Fugate, retrieved his pistol from his Gunvault and held the assailants at gunpoint until the police arrived. In another story, this time out of Utah, Eric Martin awoke to someone in his home. He grabbed his gun and confronted the intruder, holding him at gunpoint until the police arrived.
According to Martin, he asked the suspect, ‘Do you know what I have pointed at you?’ He said, ‘No,’ and I said, ‘Do you want to know?’ and he of course doesn’t respond to that one, so I tell him, ‘Let me explain, I’ve got a 9mm pointed at you with high-velocity hollow points in the chamber,’ and I explained to him what that will do to him if he moves. He tried to get up once, and I explained again that this was the last time I was going to have this conversation with him, and he stayed on the ground at that point.
These are excellent stories of private citizens using their firearms to stop a criminal and detain them until police arrive. Neither of these stories tells how long the men had to wait for the police, but a CBS4 Denver story from December of 2012 shows the average response time for Denver PD is over 15 minutes. There is an old adage that says “when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.” This is absolutely true for the residents of the City and County of Denver. For those 15 minutes that it takes for the police to arrive, the only thing that may stand between your loved ones and a potentially violent criminal is you: an ordinary citizen with a firearm.
If you own a pistol for self-defense, you might want to take our Home Defense Pistol I class at the Black Site. This class teaches the fundamentals for adequately moving through and clearing a typical residential home. It involves shooting AirSoft guns with plastic pellets and proper safety gear in controlled, mock-up-home scenarios. No live fire shooting is conducted. All equipment is provided to students during the class. Students may participate as role players if they choose and should expect to be engaged by AirSoft guns. This is a practical class that will give you an advantage over your adversary if you were to find an intruder breaking into your house.
Basic Home Defense is a class that lays the ground work for developing and implementing a good home defense plan, and is encouraged before taking our Home Defense Pistol classes, but not required. Topics covered in the class include alarm systems, home defense firearms and ammunition, safe rooms, barricading, basic self defense moves, and door/window security features.
We offer a variety of defensive and preparedness classes at our new Black Site facility. You can see a complete list of the classes offered here.

Repealing House Bill 13-1224?
May 6th
By now we are all VERY much aware of HB 13-1224. Of all the bills recently passed in CO, it’s one of the worst on it’s surface. This bill, when enacted, will ban the manufacture and transfer/sale of magazines in excess of 15 round capacity. This bill goes active on July 1st of this year!
This bill hurts business here in CO. For starters, a very successful and nationally known company in MagPul Industries is (or has) pulled up shop and left town. It took its jobs and revenue to the state treasury along with it. We really wanted to expand in CO. Our range is pretty busy all the time. We still may have another range / retail / training operation here (someday). But for now, we have to look elsewhere. More importantly, this bill does NOTHING to address the crime. Our representatives signed a bill that will NOT make us any safer. Criminals, by definition, won’t follow the law. It will only hurt those of us who do! The scariest part of this bill is how poorly it was written. It’s so vague. It’s just too likely that other enforcement agencies could interpret it different than the current administration. So now, we got a bill that is:
- Poorly written and very vague
- WIll not reduce crime
- Hurts our state from a business aspect
What are we to do about this? It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll be able to repeal this bill through the legislative process. We may gain some seats or even retake the state House or Senate. We may even have a chance at regaining the governor’s office (with the right candidate of course.) This is ALL pretty unlikely.
What about fighting it in the courts? Could it be struck down in our judicial system? In our opinion, this is possible. After all a bunch of State Sheriffs are suing. They’ve already decided NOT to enforce this HORRIFIC piece of legislation. All of that aside, it is still very unlikely to win in court (though possible….don’t lose hope!)
What does that leave us with? What other recourse is there? We here a lot of people giving up. They think there is nothing left to do but move!!
Just last week, we had a VERY interesting and exciting call with the folks at Put it to the People. They have a very interesting way of repealing this new bill. They propose the use of a ballot initiative. They intend to gather signatures, starting on June 1st (specifics are subject to change). If they can gather the necessary 185,000 signatures, they can put their measure on the ballot. If passed, it would make HB 13-1224 essentially null and void! This group has done their home work. They already have the language approved in state level hearings. Very exciting news! Unfortunately, it sounds like they can’t put it on the ballot until 2014. Let’s just hope we all still remember then exactly how upset we were right after HB 13-1224 (and others) were signed into law. For more information, please check out there site here!
Here is a snippet from their site:
“Be it Enacted by the People of the State of Colorado:
In the constitution of the state of Colorado, article II, add section 32 as follows:
Section 32. Gun magazines – no limitation or restriction.
No law, except a law enacted by a vote of the people, shall restrict or limit the right of the people to purchase or possess ammunition storage and feeding devices of any capacity.”
Pretty fascinating…and, they have done their homework. To us, this represents one of, if not THE BEST HOPE we have for repealing HB 13-1224.
What does all of this mean? What are we to do in the meantime?
Simply put: stand by. When we spoke with them it sounded like they will be launching in earnest on June 1st. They’ll be at Gun Stores, Gun Shops, Gun Ranges and even the Tanner Gun Show. They’ll be at these places with clipboards in hand getting signatures. We’ll have them at our facility, or volunteer a few of our own folks to collect signatures. When you see these people, PLEASE SIGN THEIR PETITIONS! They need 185,000 signatures. It would be AWESOME if they got even more. Again, this represents one of the best hopes we have in repealing HB 13-1224. It can’t come soon enough.
You can learn more about them here on their website / blog: http://putittothepeople.wordpress.com
You can also follow them on FaceBook here: https://www.facebook.com/PutittothePeople
They are looking for funds and volunteers. We need to support this effort. If you can, support them either financially or as a volunteer. At the VERY least, please help pass the word. Let’s help them get those 185,000 signatures!!

Victim or Heroine?
Apr 30th
Natalie Foster created the Girl’s Guide to Guns website to show other ladies just how fun, challenging and addictive shooting can be. She has become a well-known figure in the firearms industry and is now one of the new NRA commentators who are providing a fresh voice for our Second Amendment rights. In Natalie’s latest video, she comments on how she feels the President and the media often paint women as victims, and by “celebrating” the victim status, they perpetuate the cycle of victimization. Instead of doing that, why aren’t women who excel in shooting sports, or those who have used firearms to protect themselves and others, promoted as role models by the media?
I think a great case in point is the incident where a San Antonio shooting suspect opened fire in a restaurant and then ran across the street into a theater where he attempted to shoot more people. “Garcia was finally stopped by an off-duty Bexar County Sheriff’s Department officer who was working security at the theater. Officials said the officer, Sgt. Lisa Castellano, heard the gunfire inside the theater and ran towards the sound of the shooting to find out what was going on. Sgt. Castellano spotted Garcia coming out of a bathroom with his gun drawn and fired at him, shooting him four times.” Read the full story here.
I am referencing this story via the Snopes website because it attempts to explain why this newsworthy story did not get national coverage. Wouldn’t the President want to highlight a courageous person, a woman no less, who faced personal danger in order to save others? This incident took place just a few short months after the Aurora theater shooting. This sounds like media “gold” to me! Oh, wait…it’s not “newsworthy” because a gun was used in preventing additional casualties and that doesn’t work with the media’s or the President’s agenda. At least people in her hometown recognized her courage and awarded her with a Medal of Valor for her efforts in stopping the gunman at the scene of the shooting.
Ladies, just because some people try to push a “woman=victim” mentality on you, doesn’t mean you have to accept it. You CAN defend yourself. You CAN change your mindset from unaware to prepared. You CAN be a positive role model for other women and girls in your community. Be a responsible gun owner. Learn and follow gun safety rules religiously. Train often so that muscle memory will kick in if you ever need to defend yourself. Sgt. Castellano said it best when she stated, “I’m not going to lie; it was frightening.” “But, you know, the training kicks in. And thank you to the sheriff’s office for all of the training that we’re given.”
The good news is that you don’t have to work for a law enforcement agency to get great training. BluCore Shooting Center offers a wide variety of classes that will give you the confidence to defend yourself in a variety of situations.
Combat Mindset – In this class, we discuss the attitude that must be learned and adopted in order to prevent, prepare for, and react to potentially threatening situations. We discuss the proper attitude or “mindset” as applied to everyday life, carrying concealed (if you so choose) and how to apply this mindset to home defense.
Prepared Woman – This class teaches women the essential aspects of keeping themselves out of harm’s way and basic defensive techniques for encountering a direct threat. Women in this class will learn how to identify and avoid compromising situations, techniques for maintaining and improving situational awareness, and basic defensive use of tools such as mace/pepper-spray, taser, knife, and a firearm.
Blucore Pistol I – Learn the fundamentals of pistol shooting. This class will give you a solid foundation to build upon. Women-only classes available.
Concealed Carry Pistol – Learn all the rules & regulations related to carrying concealed, find out about the variety of concealment holsters, plus get actual live fire experience drawing from concealment.
These classes are just a small sample of the classes offered at BluCore Shooting Center and our new Black Site facility. We also offer Tactical Knife Options, Home Defense, and BluCore Pistol II and III. We hope you will join us for one or more of these classes. You don’t have to live your life in fear; just live your life aware and prepared.

Five Tips for Gun Safety in the Home
Apr 24th
Two of the most common causes of gun accidents in the home are carelessness and ignorance of good safety practices. With over one-third of US households owning guns, it’s important that gun owners are meticulous in enforcing good gun safety in their homes. The following tips are a good place to start, but the gun safety experts here at BluCore Shooting Center encourage you to consider taking a home safety class with all the members of your household.
BluCore Shooting Center offers a complimentary Family Firearms Safety Class designed to meet that need. Our class is about 60 minutes long and is taught the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm. We focus on beginner firearms safety as it relates to both the adults and the children in your household. We discuss the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in your home in an in-depth presentation designed to be easily understood by both adults and children. Children age 7 and above are encouraged to join their parents in this class to develop a healthy respect for firearms and their safe handling and use. Minors cannot attend without an accompanying adult.
Five Tips for Gun Safety in the Home
- Lock your firearms and ammunition in a safe place, such as a gun safe, and keep them out of reach of children. Hiding a gun is not enough. Kids can find anything.
- Keep keys to your gun and ammunition storage separate from other household keys and away from children. Kids can find anything.
- Store your gun-cleaning supplies safely away from ammunition and out of reach of children. Cleaning solvents can cause damage to ammunition cartridges.
- When handling a gun, never leave it unattended. Kids can find anything.
- Alcohol, drugs, and guns don’t mix. Ensure that access to firearms is always limited to responsible adults who are not under the influence of any substance and are mentally sound.
If you see a recurring theme here, it’s intentional. Kids can find anything and it’s important that if they do locate your guns and/or ammunition, they be secured in such a way that they will not be available for use.
The list above just covers the basics. The Family Firearms Safety Class at BluCore Shooting Center takes an in-depth look at these issues and more. Again, this class is free of charge! Safe and responsible use of firearms is a position strongly advocated by BluCore Shooting Center. We offer ongoing training classes on the safe, responsible, and effective use of firearms at our Lakewood, Colorado shooting center. We have a comprehensive firearms training program offering a variety of pistol training and gun safety classes, including concealed carry training from our NRA Instructors. BluCore now has a new training facility in south Denver called the Black Site, a converted warehouse to conduct real-world force-on-force training. Check out the Black Site blog and also the Black Site classes offered. We also offer corporate training and team building experiences, led by former combat veterans from the Special Operations community.
Browse our web site, BluCoreShootingCenter.com, and shop at our online store, or drop by the BluCore Shooting Center in person at 7860 W. Jewell Ave., just west of King Soopers at Jewell and Wadsworth. We’re open seven days a week and there’s plenty of free parking.
